I admit, it is not easy to be a servant.
What are the dreams of many? Big houses. Expensive cars. Tours around the world. Rubbing elbows with the rich and famous. Lead the biggest team. Sell the greatest hits. Break records. Be on the record books. The list is endless. I wonder if included in that list is to be a servant.
Having seen the pleasures of kings, princes, lords, and masters of this earth, it is easy to dream about being in their place. That is the unsaid curriculum of our education. That is the expressed dream of their lives.
Kids can sincerely express their dreams. That one want to become a doctor because he want to cure sick people. That other one wanted to become a teacher because she wants the children to be happy. That little boy in the corner wants to be an architect because he wants to build bridges so that people can easily travel. Kids know what it means to be a servant. Unless we train them to become slave masters.
When we grow older, society made us realize the silent curriculum: the best place in the world is the first place. The best thing in life is to have someone serve you. Not to be a servant.
The irony is most of us become slaves to our desire for success. There are no great slaves. Only those who have the desire to serve, who offer their lives to what matters most, are bound to be great.
Whoever wants to be great must become a servant.
