My Online Classes Experiences
Back in 2004, I started teaching online classes through webcasting for a university. From a studio in Quezon City, I taught subjects like economics, sociology, and business communication, reaching over 3000 students from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
It was more challenging. Slow internet made teaching online a task, but the power of reaching such a vast audience was unmistakable. It promised cost savings and equalized education for learners nationwide.
I believed in this approach so much that I promoted online classes for companies in the Philippines. Many felt online classes was ahead of its time.
But when the pandemic emerged, the world saw its potential. Today, internet connections are faster, yet many teachers initially struggled with the new medium. But with time, we’ve all adjusted.

What are online classes?
Online classes refer to structured learning experiences delivered over the Internet, wherein students and instructors engage in real-time, often using video conferencing tools, virtual whiteboards, or chat functionalities. Online classes typically follow a set schedule, much like traditional in-person classes, but occur in a virtual environment.
It is different from online courses.
Online courses are often comprehensive programs of study available on the internet, which allow students to engage with learning materials at their own pace.
They often include a mix of video lectures, readings, quizzes, assignments, and sometimes, peer interactions. While online courses can have instructor-led components, they are primarily designed for asynchronous learning.
Unlike online classes, which are real-time and instructor-led, online courses can often be accessed anytime, anywhere, allowing students more flexibility in their learning.
Online courses might include a series of online classes as part of the curriculum.
Online classes are not webinars too.
Webinars are online seminars or workshops conducted over the internet. They are typically one-off events that focus on specific topics and are presented in a lecture-style format, often with opportunities for attendees to ask questions.
While webinars and online classes both take place in real-time and use similar technologies, webinars are generally shorter in duration and are more topic-specific.
They may not necessarily have a structured learning outcome, unlike online classes which usually follow a curriculum.
And, online classes are not live seminars. I know this is obvious to you, but allow me to differentiate.
Live seminars refer to in-person gatherings, often academic or professional in nature, where informative speakers present on specific topics to an audience.
They allow for face-to-face interactions and can vary in length from a few hours to several days.
The primary difference is the mode of delivery. Live seminars are conducted in physical locations, requiring attendees to be present in person, while online classes are conducted virtually.
Live seminars are done in one location; online classes can have students everywhere in the world.
Live seminars can offer networking opportunities and direct interactions in a way that online classes might not.
I do more workshops and bootcamps than seminars because I pay attention to developing skills, not giving information. But seminars are effective ways to educate employees.

Here are five disadvantages of online classes.

One disadvantage of online classes is the absence of direct, in-person interaction between students and instructors. This can lead to feelings of isolation and may hinder the development of soft skills, such as communication and teamwork.
It can also make it harder to ask questions, get immediate feedback, or participate in spontaneous discussions.
Technical Issues
Dependence on technology means that both instructors and students can face technical challenges.
These can range from poor internet connectivity to software glitches. Such issues can disrupt the learning process and cause frustration.
Self-Discipline and Time Management
Online classes often require a high degree of self-motivation. Without the structure of a traditional classroom, some students may struggle to manage their time effectively, leading to procrastination and potentially falling behind in the coursework.
My method is flipped online classes, which demand participants to be self-driven. Of course, when participants are not self-driven, they will also miss learning opportunities even in face-to-face sessions.
Limited Practical Experience
Certain subjects, especially those that involve hands-on training like lab experiments, medical procedures, or art workshops, can be challenging to replicate effectively in a fully online environment.
The virtual space might not provide the necessary hands-on experience that an in-person setting would.
However, the programs that I offer like public speaking, leadership, and professional development may work well with online classes.
Accessibility and Equity Concerns
While online classes aim to be inclusive, there’s a digital divide that exists. Not all employees have equal access to reliable internet connections or the necessary devices to participate in online learning.
This can lead to disparities in learning experiences and outcomes among employees. But you can say the same thing in face-to-face classes. Employees’ bandwidth is not always the same.
While these disadvantages present challenges, many of them can be mitigated through thoughtful course design, the integration of supportive technologies, and awareness and action from the company and trainers.

Have you ever felt that traditional online classes sometimes just skim the surface?
Flipped online classes allow learners to delve deeper into topics, making every minute of the class more interactive and valuable.
In Flipped Online Classes, the learning is, well, ‘flipped’.
Instead of attending a live class to hear a lecture, participants first go through the core content on their own time. This could be videos, readings, or even interactive modules.
Then, during the actual class time, we dive straight into discussions, problem-solving, and activities that build on that knowledge.
