abundant harvest

Abundance: Puno, Siksik, Liglig at Umaapaw

Puno, siksik, liglig at umaapaw is the best expression of abundance in tagalog. Filipinos pray for “masaganang bagong taon“, an abundant New Year. Not because many people wallow in poverty, but because there is joy in abundance.

Let’s talk about how we can bring this value to your life and your organization.

What is abundance?

Abundance means an overflowing fullness or more than adequate quantify or supply. As a personal value, people with an abundance mentality pay more attention to their assets — and then multiply the value of those assets. One with a growth mindset has abundance as a personal value.

Though seldom used by companies as a core value, each organization aspires to abundance. That’s the very essence of business. Abundance can be a differentiating value. Both employees and customers will be happy to work with organizations that value abundance.

Abundance in Tagalog is kasaganaan. The word root word is sagana. When people greet each other masaganang bagong taon, they pray for a prosperous new year. When they pray for masaganang ani, they want a bountiful harvest. Abundance as a value is common to Filipinos.

Another word for abundance is bountiful. In Tagalog, bountiful is also sagana. It may also mean marami or many.

Abundance Mindset

An abundant life is a fruit of an abundant mindset.

An abundant mindset is a belief that God provides us with enough resources for everyone. And we can nurture, cultivate, and multiply these resources.

Though many Filipino farmers do not get wealthy with farming, farming teaches us about the multiplication of resources.

An abundant mindset is an appreciative mindset. You pay attention to what you already have.

In my garden, from one seed of avocado comes an avocado plant. It may take time for the avocado tree to give me hundreds of fruits, but that time will surely come. While waiting, some other plants and trees give me abundantly.

One ginger can become more in months. Hundreds of siling labuyo sprout from the ground where the mother plant was uprooted. I can plant Okra, lettuce, petchay, onions, and many more in pots.

An abundant mindset is a growth mindset. You believe that you have the capacity to learn.

You can increase your knowledge, skills, talents, and abilities. You can become an expert in a field of your interest if you work on it. For example, you can become confident and speak in a crowd if you devote time to learning about public speaking and people.

You only need some things before you can start. You have everything your need today.

Because of an abundant mindset, you are fearless in starting before you are ready.

Vital behaviors of an abundant person.

You can strengthen your abundance mindset through action. You can replace the scarcity mindset through abundance actions.

You will know a person who values abundance by their actions. The three big steps I made to achieve personal development include choosing a growth mindset. It is the opposite of the poverty mentality.

Allow me to give you some examples.

Focus on your assets.

Those who value abundance pay attention to what they already have and how they can use what they have to create more value.

Demonstrate an attitude of gratitude.

I find them always thankful for what they have. They seldom complain. You can say that they have the habit of counting their blessings.

Befriend those with an abundant mindset.

They choose to work with people who are creative and giving. They build organizations that give and volunteer.

Create win-win situations.

There is a space for everyone. You don’t have to lose for me to win. I consider this thinking very helpful when dealing with clients.

Collaborate with others.

They don’t compete, they collaborate. They find ways to create synergy. In this sense, someone with an abundant mindset is a multiplier.

Recognize new possibilities. A growth mindset helps us think of abundant ways to create value. Even a failure is an opportunity for growth. Consider, for example, how an abundant mindset turns sticky notes into one big industry.

FAQs on Abundance Mindset

When you have questions about the abundance mindset, feel free to contact me via inspire@jefmenguin.com.

The first two questions are the most frequent questions I get from readers.

You can teach how to strengthen an abundance mindset at work. For example, you can follow these simple steps:

  1. Declare that your organization values an abundance mindset among your employees. Talk about it in your kick-offs, anniversaries, and regular meetings.
  2. Bring leaders into a classroom training on the value of an abundance mindset, the vital behaviors, and ways to teach it to people.
  3. Recognize and reward people. Show your employees how an abundance mindset benefits these people and your organization.

We don’t create an abundance mindset; we choose an abundance mindset. Many people who are born into poverty know the scarcity mindset. It is the mindset that governs their decisions and the way they relate with people. They learned this mindset from the people around them. But some parents, though they lack money, have chosen an abundance mindset. They multiplied what they had and taught their children the same. Having an abundance mindset is a choice.

Yes, I deliver talks on an abundance mindset. It is also a component of my leadership training and personal development programs. When leaders choose an abundance mindset, they influence others to choose it too.
