False Beliefs (and How to Fix Them)

False beliefs can sabotage our growth by creating misconceptions that hold us back. When we believe in something that isn’t true, we stop looking for real solutions and rely on ineffective ones. This keeps us stuck in the same place, unable to move forward.

Today, I’ll talk about some observations on how government officials, through programs like 4Ps, unintentionally make us dependent on them. These false beliefs can prevent us from becoming self-reliant and truly improving our lives.

But don’t worry, I’ll also share how we can fix these false beliefs. Together, we can find better ways to achieve long-term growth and independence.

Duterte the Traditional Politician

Duterte and His False Beliefs

Many people have false beliefs about their capacity. A relative success in their small world makes them believe that they can easily multiply it in the big world.

It is tempting to believe that with greater influence and more money at one’s disposal, one can do as he pleases. That all others who came before them were nincompoops. That they can accomplish in three months what others failed to do in ten years.

I get this impression every time the President speaks.

In many occasions, sometimes even on live TV, he confessed that he was overwhelmed by the bigness of national problems. That he is sick and that he is tired. That the challenges he promised to solve in three days, three months, or three years cannot be solved in six years or in a lifetime.

He even said that there is no hope for us for we are a god-forsaken country.

But he was, of course, quick to remind us that there is still one hope. Him. He said that he is our last card.

I don’t believe this. But many do.

There are ways to improve the lives of our people. But I doubt we can solve it the old way.

Though the President promised change, he cannot deliver many of his promises. That’s because he is a man of the past. He uses mindsets, strategies, and tactics of traditional politicians, not of innovative leaders.

Learn from our experience during these turbulent times. We do not have to see ourselves in these rock-bottom situation again and again.

Fixing False Beliefs Spread by Traditional Politicians

Politicians like Duterte have made us think that the Philippines is hopeless and that they’re the only ones who can save us. But that’s not true! We need to change how we think and take back our power.

First, let’s focus on education and critical thinking. We need to learn to question what we hear and find the truth ourselves. When we’re educated, we can see through lies and understand what’s really going on.

Next, let’s get involved in our communities. When we work together and support local projects, we build stronger communities. This way, we won’t need to rely on politicians to solve our problems.

We should also share and celebrate success stories. Many Filipinos have made positive changes without depending on politicians. By sharing these stories, we can inspire others to take action and believe in themselves.

We need to hold our leaders accountable. Let’s demand transparency and honesty from those in power. When politicians know we’re watching, they’re more likely to do what’s right.

Let’s support policies that promote long-term solutions and self-reliance. Instead of looking for quick fixes, we should focus on sustainable development that empowers people and communities.

Finally, let’s encourage everyone to participate. Vote, stay informed, and get involved in community projects. We are not hopeless; we have the power to create the change we want to see. Together, we can build a better future for the Philippines.

4Ps and False Beliefs

When 4Ps started, it was seen as a game-changer, promising to lift millions out of poverty by providing financial aid to families in need.

But as time went on, we began to notice some misconceptions taking hold.

False Belief #1: Cash Transfers Alone Can Eradicate Poverty

One of the biggest myths is that cash transfers alone can end poverty. Yes, the money helps, but it doesn’t solve deeper issues like lack of jobs, education, and healthcare.

Take Juan and Maria, for example. They were thrilled when they started receiving 4Ps money. It helped them buy food and school supplies for their kids.

But without job opportunities or skills training, they found themselves stuck in the same situation. The cash helped, but it wasn’t a permanent solution.

False Belief #2: Government Aid Is a Permanent Solution

Another misconception is that government aid is a forever solution. This belief can lead to dependency, where people rely only on the cash transfers and don’t look for other ways to improve their lives.

In one barangay, many families got used to the regular cash inflow. Over time, some stopped looking for work or trying to start businesses, relying solely on 4Ps.

This dependency is dangerous and goes against the program’s goal of helping families become self-reliant.

False Belief #3: Attendance Equals Learning

We also need to talk about education. 4Ps encourages kids to attend school, which is great. But just showing up isn’t enough. Quality education is what really matters.

Think about Lisa, a student who never missed a day of school thanks to 4Ps. But in her overcrowded classroom, with limited learning materials, Lisa struggled to learn. Regular attendance is important, but we also need to ensure that our kids are actually learning.

False Belief #4: Health Check-Ups Ensure Health

Finally, let’s talk about health. 4Ps requires kids to get regular health check-ups, which is good. But check-ups alone don’t guarantee good health.

In a rural health center, parents brought their kids for the required check-ups. But due to a lack of medical supplies and trained professionals, many health issues weren’t addressed.

Good health depends on more than just regular check-ups; it requires quality healthcare services.

Moving Beyond Myths

So, what do we do now? We need to shift our focus and address these false beliefs:

  • Comprehensive Approach to Poverty: Understand that cash transfers are just part of the solution. We need to invest in education, healthcare, and job creation to create lasting change.
  • Promote Self-Reliance: Encourage skills training and entrepreneurship to reduce dependency on government aid.
  • Improve Educational Quality: Focus on ensuring kids not only attend school but also receive a good education.
  • Strengthen Healthcare Systems: Support health check-ups with quality healthcare services, proper nutrition, and access to medical treatments.

Make 4Ps Work Better

4Ps has been a great start, but we need to break free from these false beliefs to create real, lasting change.

By focusing on a more holistic approach, we can help Filipino families become truly self-reliant and prosperous.

Let’s challenge these misconceptions and work towards solutions that include education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

Together, we can transform lives and break the cycle of poverty for future generations
