I was invited by a multi-national company to train 60 supervisors. Half of the participants have been in their position for the at least five years. The new ones are now in their second year as supervisors.
They were efficient line leaders.
But it seems that it is only now the company realized that they promoted people who are not ready for the job.
Even big companies sometimes think small. They make the facade of their office building look good, but they do not invest in training leaders.
This is my personal belief.
Do not promote your leaders until they are ready. Doing so will frustrate them and they will give you a lot of headaches.
Train your leaders first.

1. Training turns inefficient employees to productive leaders.
In addition to learning how to complete new tasks and take on more responsibility, employees can learn advance techniques to help them complete everyday tasks more efficiently.
A business writing seminar, for example, may help your managers finish writing business letters in half the time they usually write business letters.
How long does it take your people to write one-page reports? Thirty minutes!
Oh, you must have been paying managers a lot of money so they can write a report explaining why they were not able to deliver the goods yesterday.
2. Trained leaders stay longer at a job.
When leaders received guidance and found it easier to learn the requirements of the job, they are more likely to stay at a job.
Many Filipino employees value stability and security. They stay in companies that give them opportunities to learn new skills and keep up within the industry.
Do you want the inefficient employees to stay longer? Of course not. You’ll make them turn effective.
I realized that there are leaders who do not improve even if you send them regularly to seminars and workshops. But the really good ones will surely leave if they the sun will not shine on them.
They need to grow. I think training is for achievers. Feed your achievers.

3. Training brings higher job satisfaction.
When you invest time and money in employees’ skills, it make them feel valued and appreciated. It challenges them to learn more and get more involved in their jobs.
Higher job satisfaction ultimately results in reduced turnover and higher productivity.
4. You get the bigger opportunity to hire the most desirable candidates when you train leaders.
Because training aids you in the recruiting process.
You may not always get the most skillful person for the job, but you will have more confidence to hire a desirable candidate who lacks a specific skill but shows great promise because you know that your company will train them.
As a workplace learning consultant, I know that it is easier for me to facilitate the maximum learning of a young person with great attitude and diligence to learn than an experienced unambitious and unteachable employee.
5. Given #4, training can help you put the right leaders to sit in the right seat of the bus.
It also makes your company more attractive in the eyes of potential leaders because it shows them that they have room to grow and accept new challenges.
I think the availability of leadership training courses is one of the best recruitment tool you can use to attract high potential professionals to your organization.
6. Training provides leaders the opportunity to be promoted.
The best organizations have managers who train supervisors and have supervisors who train team leaders. People appreciate that you provide them the opportunity be promoted before you consider getting someone from outside the organization.
They call it job security.
I think this is simply common sense.

7. Trained leaders feel rewarded and cared.
And yes, training is really a reward for loyal and motivated leaders.
You may use training to correct the mistakes of your leaders, of course.
And I suggest that you focus on training the top 20 percent of the productive leaders in your organization and teach them how to train others.
Let them be your role models. This is one of the better ways in building a learning culture in your organization.
8. Trained leaders become more independent and effective decision-makers.
Are not employees problem solvers?
You hired leaders because you have problems that you cannot solve yourself.
Train your leaders to be creative, to solve their problems, and decide when they have the power to make decisions. Remember, even Moses had to delegate his work.
Train your leaders so you will have more confidence in making them decision makers too.
9. Training develop can-do attitude.
Training give your leaders more confidence that they can do their job well.

10. Training help you align the values of your leaders with the desired values of your organization.
Some people think that values cannot be taught.
I do not agree.
In fact, because you are reading me now, something has already changed in you. You may have not noticed that. You may not agree with me today.
But one day, you will find yourself telling people what I have just told you. Why? Because values are caught, thought, and taught. I am pretty sure that you were thinking while reading.
