How was the last team-building program you have attended? Are you now more compact as a team, or you found your last team-building session an Extra Challenge or FEAR FACTOR imitation that it created embarrassment and more divisions between groups? I have observed that many team-building programs are poorly designed that it causes more tension between teams. They used team-building activities that defeated the purposes in building the teams.
There is of course a good reason for contest between teams. I also use contest from time to time. But it was always to highlight the importance of improving the dynamics of cross-functional teams. I was a participant to many team-building programs that brought us to many embarrassing situations.
There was one team-building program where our team was always the losing team. And the other teams, the participants of which I only came to know that day, were delighted that we were the “losers”. They kept on shouting “losers, losers”. The facilitator chose activities which unfortunately placed our team in great disadvantaged in size, in height, in skills, and even in numbers. The worst part of course was that there was no debriefing done. It was all games.
This is also what I observed when I was looking for team-building providers in Sulit.com. Most of the team-building providers are selling something but the team-building program. Some are actually selling their transport services and they simply hire game facilitators. And there are more who are just interested in offering their team-building facilities. Very few of them are actually interested in helping you build your team.
Before you contact your next teambuilding facilitators, I suggest you read these tips I read a while ago in National Seminars Training.
