Overpromise and overdeliver

Some people say “Underpromise and overdeliver”.

At the very least, promise what you really can do. Do not underpromise. To underpromise is to play safe. When you underpromise you are in effect lowering the bar. Underpromising is fear of failure. Remember: even the best team fails. Even Efren Bata Reyes losses a game. To underpromise means you say 8 when you can do 10, and call it overdeliver when you do 9. This is a lossers game.

Leaders create something which is not yet there, they actualize visions. Olympians create what is not yet there, they break records. Magellan did not underpromise. Obama did not underpromise. Bill Gates promised to create a program which was not yet there. And the rest is history. Underpromising does not inspire people. Overpromising does.

Make no mistake about it. Overpromising does not mean you will make the sun rotate around the moon. Just keep on raising the bar. Break new grounds. Add new color. Ask your team, your client, and your audience what else you can do satisfy and delight them. Then do more than that which delights them. Amaze them.

Overpromise and overdeliver-this is the winners’ game.

another way you can put it is if you’re used to a high rolling lifestyle and your circumstances suddenly change you adapt by looking for ways to gain back the income you’re used to instead of lowering your bar and making do with whatever you can make. don’t change your lifestyle… look for opportunities to gain back the lost income.
